Ice Lake in the Eagle Cap Wilderness

April 8, 2015 by Oregon Photo

Ice Lake, in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Oregon, is a pristine and magnificently scenic alpine lake nestled at the bottom of the Matterhorn and Sacajawea Peak of the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon.  Known as the “Oregon Alps”, the Wallowa Mountains are a scenery-packed wonderland of splendid beauty.  Home to 17 mountains that eclipse 9,000 feet and derive from the Nez Perce word for “land of running waters,” the Wallowas of northeastern Oregon offers the state’s best backpacking experience.  The […]

John Day River Basin

April 8, 2015 by Oregon Photo

John Day is both a name for a city and a river in Eastern Oregon.  The city of John Day is the largest in Grant County, Oregon, albeit with a population of 1,850 residents.  However, it is the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape of John Day that makes up for its size. There are countless outdoor recreation activities, from fishing, hiking, backpacking, camping, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, hunting, photography, and scenic driving to name a few.  There are three […]

Proxy Falls

April 7, 2015 by Oregon Photo

Proxy Falls in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Central Oregon is among Oregon’s most frequently photographed waterfalls.  With its multi-tiered horsetail appearance, it is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest and has been featured in many calendars and postcards over the years.  Proxy Falls has a height of 226 feet and is fed by springs on a shoulder of North Sister.  The falls get their name from Proxy Creek which tumbles over a moss covered basalt […]

Mickey Basin

April 7, 2015 by Oregon Photo

Mickey Basin is a 4-mile long depression in the dry desert playa in the shadow of the Steens Mountain in Southern Oregon. Mickey Hot Springs and Mickey Butte are the two notable attractions in the basin. Located north of the Alvord Desert playa, the basin is split into two distinct valleys by a dark ridge that runs south from the Sheepshead Mountain Range. Mickey Butte is the highest point of this ridge at 6,294 feet. This alkali flat desert is […]

Ecola State Park

April 6, 2015 by Oregon Photo

Ecola State Park, north of Cannon Beach, is located off the historic Highway 101 along the Oregon coast. The park, as it is perched dramatically on the edge of a headland, provides some of the most breathtaking panoramic coastal views in the Pacific Northwest.  The dramatic southern view includes Cannon Beach and its most prominent landmark, Haystack Rock.  At times the scene is filled with mist and fog pouring down from the nearby coastal range which gives the scene a remarkable […]

Steens Mountain

Steens Mountain

August 22, 2014 by Oregon Photo

The Steens Mountain in the southeastern part of Oregon stretches along Harney County, with its 9,733 foot summit towering above the Alvord Desert. The length of the Steens Mountain is impressive, and running 50 miles, it is often confused as a series of mountains. Yet, the majestic Steens is a single mountain and is the largest-fault block mountain in the northern Great Basin.  For an expansive view, there is no finer place in Oregon to view Steens Mountain than from […]

Canyon Creek Meadows

August 22, 2014 by Oregon Photo

Canyon Creek Meadows in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness of Central Oregon is a top destination for alpine wildflower meadows.  The hike starts at Jack Lake and traverses through silver snags of burnt forest from the 2003 B&B Complex forest fire.  The trail continues up through dense patches of green forest, alongside the pristinely flowing Canyon Creek, and ultimately through vibrant wildflower meadows up to the base of Three Fingered Jack.  Here at the Upper Canyon Creek Meadow is where for […]

Painted Hills Oregon

Painted Hills | John Day Fossil Beds

March 23, 2013 by Oregon Photo

Painted Hills is one of three units comprising the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Near Mitchell, Oregon, the area is regarded as one of the most beautifully striking regions in Eastern Oregon. The Painted Hills receive their name from spectacular colors and banded striations that appear hand-painted with an artistic quality that seems almost unnatural and highly surreal. These colors shift in appearance throughout different times of the day due to the varying angles of the sun. They absolutely […]

Alvord Desert

Alvord Desert

October 8, 2012 by Oregon Photo

The Alvord Desert, located near the southeastern corner of Oregon, rivals the splendor and solitude of many of the better known desert playa landscapes in Nevada or California and is an under-appreciated jewel of the state of Oregon. With the Steens Mountain looming to the west, the alkali flat of the Alvord Desert is not only one of the largest in Oregon, but it is the most remote and sensationally wild. The flat stretches 6 miles wide and 11 miles […]

Ona Beach State Park

June 9, 2012 by Oregon Photo

Along the Oregon coast there is a little known stretch of sand called Ona Beach.  At Ona Beach State Park, there are parking, restrooms, a large grassy area, and shaded picnic tables right off Highway 101.  With the atmosphere rather dark and lackluster, the place feels like just another pit stop along this well-traveled highway.  However, after a quarter mile hike through dense pine trees and over a footbridge above Beaver Creek, a new scene emerges.   The area opens to a […]

Fall Mountain Lookout Cabin

October 21, 2009 by Oregon Photo

The Fall Mountain Lookout Cabin is a former Oregon Forest Service lookout built in 1933. Back in the day, before satellite surveillance technology, lookout personnel monitored the forest from this perch for signs of smoke, alerting fire guards at times of peril. The lookout is located approximately 14 miles southwest from John Day, Oregon on Fall Mountain in the Malheur National Forest. At an elevation of 5,949 feet, the approximately 25 foot high lookout tower offers 360-degree views of the Strawberry […]

The 25 mile-long trail follows the John Day River downstream through a rimrock canyon featuring forests of Douglas Fir and lodgepole pines, rocky outcrops, smooth meadows, and decaying log cabins of Oregon’s gold rush pioneers. Elowah Falls

April 5, 2009 by Oregon Photo

Elowah Falls and Upper McCord Creek Falls in the Columbia River Gorge are prime locations to photograph waterfalls. I feel that both of these waterfalls are hidden gems as I have visited many of the falls in the area and these two stand out as favorites. In visiting both falls, my roundtrip hiking distance was 3 miles with some parts of the trail fairly steep, yet overall, it was a very comfortable hike and one that I will remember for […]

Crater Lake National Park

December 28, 2008 by Oregon Photo

Crater Lake in Southern Oregon is well-known for its intense and pristine blue color and spectacular views in the summer.  In the winter months, the lake is typically socked in with fog and snow as Crater Lake National Park receives an average of 44 feet of snow every year.  This was my first visit to Crater Lake and my friend Christian and I thought a snowshoeing and overnight camping trip would be a memorable adventure a few days before Christmas.   […]

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, in the remote northeast corner of Oregon, is part of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and is between the borders of northeastern Oregon and western Idaho. The area encompasses 652,488 scenic acres and over 900 miles of trails. In its deepest part, Hells Canyon drops 8,000 feet to the Snake River, making it the deepest river gorge in North America. After some research, I chose the destination of Bear Mountain, which offered a rather short […]

The Aldrich Mountains outside of John Day in Eastern Oregon are part of the larger Blue Mountains range and are far less crowded then many of their popular Oregon counterparts.  Yet, the Aldrich Mountains offer outdoor enthusiasts miles of hiking trails and spectacular views of the John Day basin. They are named after Oliver Aldrich, a pioneer who was killed by Native Americans in the Bannock War of 1878, on a nearby mountain which now bears his name.  One of the […]
